Underwater Photography and Video

Learn the skills and techniques of underwater photography and film from the hand-selected team of famed photographer Fiona Ayerst. Join us in tropical Mozambique or exciting Durban.

Acquire the knowledge and practical skills required to master the art of underwater photography and videography while exploring the incredible diversity of the stunning coral reefs of the warm Indian Ocean. The course uses  dSLR cameras in Sea&Sea housings; DSLR and micro four-thirds video and GoPros together with LED lighting and accessories.

Developed by internationally acclaimed underwater photographer, journalist and conservationist Fiona Ayerst, this course will empower students to see and explore the underwater realm in a totally new and intimate manner. We focus on becoming part of the marine world; using specialised breathing techniques and capitalising on the natural curiosity of the marine inhabitants. Fiona’s hand-picked and personally trained team will teach you how to capture the perfectly exposed and composed images and film. Creativity and new techniques are key.

The team can also show you how to capture star trails; time-lapses and other interesting land-based techniques, should you be interested. We mix in a little bit of information on how a young person entering this competitive but exciting field can make money out of photography. The Mozambique dive sites include some of the top rated dive reefs in the world such as Manta reef. The whale sharks in Mozambique are legendary. During the winter months the humpback whales are omnipresent as they come to breed in the bay. In Durban you will have a chance to dive the fantastic Aliwal Shoal and also get into the water with the black-tip sharks that frequent the area. Our partner dive company, Blue Wilderness specialises in shark diving and has a shark cage for those who prefer. Specifically, the month-long Mozambique program consists of a 20 dive photography/video package,  1 cultural photography trip with a half day outing to the estuary near Barra, Inhambane. The course price includes 3 ocean safaris of which 2 are long-distance safaris aimed to get you the best chance of swimming with whale sharks and/or humpback whales, depending on which month you join the program. The month-long Durban program has a similar dive schedule and there are two other trips, one to Tala game reserve or the Oribi Gorge and one to famous uShaka Aquarium in Durban, or the Croc farm in Clansthal, included. In both venues, you will also receive a free ‘introduction to free-diving course’ and perform at least 1 pool session and 2 free-diving/snorkeling trips out into the deep blue to look for whales, dolphins and sharks- and hopefully get to free-dive with them.

The 2 week programs are designed to cater for those who can’t take a month off work and are essentially half the number of dives. Included in the price is daily tuition and personal attention from Fiona Ayerst’s team. In other words, you will live, eat and breathe underwater photography for a full month. The price includes the use of professional underwater DSLR underwater photography kit,(with at least one and usually two strobes) and a month of food, accommodation and fun either at Blue Wilderness in Scottburgh near Durban in South Africa or at Guinjata dive Centre  near Inhambane in Mozambique.
